WAKE TO BIRDCALLS instead of phone calls, take a cup of French press coffee out onto the porch, and watch the sun rise over the Catskills. Take a short walk on the cottage trails for a bit of exercise.
The tiny Main Cottage is your central living space by day, with comfortable seating and an expandable writing table. A concealed, full-size Murphy bed easily pulls down for sleeping and folds away as needed. Bed linens are provided.
The eco-efficient kitchen has ample counter space, gas stove with oven, an icebox, and a gravity-fed sink. It is fully equipped with dishes, utensils, pots & French coffee press. Complimentary eggs, bread, coffee, tea and juice will tide you over until you've had a chance to visit local groceries.
Follow the pergola path between buildings to the cheery, sky-lit bathhouse. There you'll find a hot shower, flush toilet and lighting powered by battery and gravity-fed water. Towels are provided.
Absorb the evening solitude around a fire in the outdoor barrel stove under the big starry sky.
If you are a Tiny house enthusiast or find off grid living attractive this is your perfect retreat.
THE PERFECT GETAWAY for writers, painters, nature lovers, engagement weekend, honeymoon. Relax and slow down. There are no neighbors in sight and no light pollution to disrupt the starry skies. Intermittent cell phone service keeps the world at bay.
Owner Clare and husband Neil live on the 50 acre property and are available to answer questions or steer you toward the right road/trail. We will greet you upon arrival and explain the essentials of off grid living. A fully charged battery, potable water and ice blocks for the "fridge" will be provided once daily; as usage is guest dependent, we will arrange a time least disruptive to your stay.
THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Just hours from NYC, Schoharie County is best known for its rural character, scenic vistas and farmer’s markets. But the County's real secret treasures are hidden in the hills. Take a drive off the main roads to scout out remnants of forgotten towns and farms. Tiny hamlets, rustic architecture, artists’ workshops and barns abound. And there are thirty-three thousand acres of state land for all manner of outdoor activities. A paper map is highly recommended for backroad forays. Take a Yoga, Pilates or exercise class. Head to Vroman’s Nose for a short scenic hike with panoramic views of the "Bread basket of the Revolution." Shop various farm stands for fresh fruits and vegetables. Join the locals for 1st Friday festivities in nearby Middleburgh. On-site Patria Gardens perennial nursery and artist Neil Driscoll's studio are open by appointment. Bring along your Hybrid or trail bike for a more intimate experience.
GETTING AROUND
You will need a car. There is parking at the cottage, in foul weather AWD or 4WD is recommended, although we can drive you up the hill if you are concerned about your car. Adventurous spirit? Bring your bike to explore those backroads & trails on a more intimate basis. A map is highly recommended, as GPS and phone service are notoriously unreliable off the beaten path.
